Course and Event Preview
Brand new event and location on the European Tour. Making Saudi Arabia the 48th country to of hosted a European Tour event.
Newly constructed course on offer. Royal Greens Golf and Country Club was designed by the European Design Team and opened for play in April 2018.
Style of Course - Coastal, Desert Resort.
Par 70 - Measuring 7,010 yards. ( 2 x par 5’s)
Greens - Paspalum, Gently undulating with expected speeds of 11’ 6” maybe 12’ with the calm winds.
Fairways - Relatively wide as with resort course designs, a few doglegs and minimal elevation changes.
Rough - Rye, cut to lengths of 25mm, 63mm, and 85mm.
Features - Extremely well prepared and manicured course. Plenty of water or desert wasteland in play or creating a very pleasing visual effect.
An extremely top end heavy field with 4 of the top 5 in the world gracing this event with their presence. Plus plenty of big names and characters making appearances as well. Their is as to be expected a strong showing from the European Tour regulars, however with some choosing not to play this week a number of opportunities have been created for those lower down the pecking order with their ranking and for a handful of sponsors invites to take piece of this well paid event.
Nothing to worry about here when making your picks. Both of the opening rounds will be played in relatively similar conditions. You can expect a very light breeze first thing in the morning that gradually builds as the day goes on. But not too strengths that will seriously effect scoring.
That being said when placing my first round leader bets I have gone for those teeing it up early on Thursday.. There will barely be a breath of wind and the greens will be at there very purist for those early starters.
With the very calm conditions forecast, these short coastal resort courses lose their main defence and scoring often gets a little out of control. Therefore my main focus this week has to be scoring. Players will probably need to be at least 4 shots into the red in order to make the cut and our contenders on Sunday will be 20 + under par.
Birdie or better performance.
