DraftKings Picks for The Wyndham Championship 2021

The PGA Tour’s Super Season of golf is winding down with the last regular season event on deck. One last chance for the players to find a spot or improve their rank in the FedEx Cup playoffs and secure their tour card for next season. This week, the field heads to Greensboro, North Carolina for the 2021 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club.  Let's get you set to see some green screens on DraftKings this weekend.

What's up golf addicts! AC here, checking in week to week to provide a quick preview of the upcoming PGA Tour event. I’ll give you the lowdown on the course, the players, some key stats, and our favorite DraftKings picks for the week.

We had a double dose of golf last week and got two first time winners with Abraham Ancer and Erik Van Rooyen. Ancer notched his first and the largest payday of his career at the World Golf Championships (WGC) FedEx St Jude Invitational in Memphis while Erik Van Rooyen took down the Barracuda Championship at Lake Tahoe. Hopefully you followed DB’s Big Balls Betting Card cause DB hit another winner with Abe, bringing the BBBC up to 56 units this season.

There are lots of storylines heading into the week. On one side you have guys like Olympic bronze medalist CT Pan (120th), Adam Scott (121st), Ryan Armour (122nd), Patrick Rodgers (123rd), Matt Kuchar (124th), and Bo Hoag (125th) trying to hold on to the last few spots in the top 125 and make the playoffs while Scott Piercy (126th), Nate Lashley (127th), Michael Thompson (128th), Camilo Villegas (129th) and low and behold Rickie Fowler desperately try to extend their seasons.

The Webb Simpson Open.. I mean Wyndham Championship has been around since 1938 with Sam Snead winning the inaugural event, though it did go by a different name. Since then the Sedgefield Country Club has seen the likes of Byron Nelson, Bob Goalby, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, and of course, Webb Simpson hoist the trophy on Sunday. Webb is in the field once again this week with nothing worse than a T3 his last four starts in Greensboro.

Joining Webb at the top of the DraftKings pricing are Hideki Matsuyama, Louis Oosthuizen, Will Zalatoris, Jason Kokrak, Brain Harman, Tommy Fleetwood, Sungjae Im, Russell Henley, Matthew Wolff, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson, and past Wyndham Championship winners Patrick Reed (2013) and Si Woo Kim (2016) rounding out the $9k and above range. The 2020 champion, Jim Herman, is back to defend his title along with former champs JT Poston (2019), Brandt Snedeker (2018), Villegas (2014), and Ryan Moore (2009).

Sedgefield Country Club Course Breakdown

Another historic Donald Ross design will be in the spotlight this week as Sedgefield Country Club takes center stage. The 7,100 yard par 70 was opened in 1926 with some renovations by Kris Spence in 2007. The course features Bermudagrass tee to green with Champion bermudagrass covering the putting surfaces. There are six holes with water in play and 52 bunkers offering defense.

Sedgefield does not require a long ball which is even more evident looking at the former champs. It’s a less than driver course for a lot of guys with below average driving distance and a super high green in regulation (GIR) % due to the fairly large greens. The trouble generally is found on the greens as Ross likes to make things tricky with elevation and undulations.

Along with approach which is undoubtedly always the most important stat, even with the easiest to hit greens on tour, putting and more specifically putting on Bermudagrass will be key this week. There will be lots of birdies up for grabs with the winning scores hovering around the -20 mark in recent years but the potential for a three putt is always around the corner and will be a factor.

With just two par 5s, your guys will have to take advantage as both are very eagleable. Par 4 scoring, however, is a big must. There are eight holes between 400-450 yards with two more above 500, barely less than the two par 5s. This is definitely a ball striker's paradise but if you can’t putt; you’re in trouble.

The Picks & Fades

Each week I will give you my plays and a fade from each DraftKings salary range.

$9k+:

DB: Play - Russell Henley | Fade - Si Woo Kim

Pat: Play - Webb Simpson | Fade - Matthew Wolff

AC: Play - Will Zalatoris, Jason Kokrak, Russell Henley | Fade - Hideki Matsuyama

Willy z has had a bit of a health struggle recently but seems to be coming along okay and is planning on ricky bobbying this week. He needs a win to extend his season and is coming off another top 10, his eighth in his first season playing the PGA Tour. Kokrak has been a staple for me and has two wins already this season. He can certainly get the job done here with a hot putter and his ability to make birdies. Russ has been hit or miss but is generally automatic for me when on bermuda greens. He’s fourth in approach and has great par 4 and opps gained numbers. It’s probably no shock that I’m fading the highest priced guy but Deki has been striking the ball so well that he has to regress a bit and I don’t think the putter will have him competing for a top spot this week.

$8k:

DB: Play - Kevin Streelman | Fade - Erik Van Rooyen

Pat: Play - Charl Schwartzel | Fade - Kevin Na

AC: Play - Gary Woodland, Kevin Kisner | Fade - Robert Macintyre

Gary is likely my Pop the Cork play this week. I wasn’t on him until I really tried to narrow down this range but the ownership looks really good and the ball striking has started to come back. Nothing jumps off the page but he’s 13th in DK scoring the last three months is pretty solid all around. Kiz kinda hurt me last week but maybe it was a bit optimistic. He should shine in this course and field coming off a T3 last year. Set the greens on fire, Kiz! I can’t get on the Bobby Mac train. The ownership does look really enticing but the stats.. The stats are just so bad. I don’t think he can score enough points to pay off an $8,900 tag.

$7k:

DB: Play - Bo Hoag | Fade - Mito Perriera

Pat: Play - JT Poston | Fade - Ryan Moore

AC: Play - Talor Gooch, Chris Kirk, Patton Kizzire | Fade - Hank Lebioda

Like usual there are tons of guys down here that can take this down. The three I lay before you have upside and relief from some chalk. All three are also sitting well inside the top 70 which will get them into the BMW Championship. If Gooch has a decent week on the greens the rest of his game should have him in contention. T25 at the Wyndham in 2020 after two MCs. Similar story for Kirk who has a great bermuda track record, making the cut here in all five tries which includes a T11 in 2018. Kizzire can putt the lights out and pile up birdies. Nothing worse than a T53 in four starts, T13 in 2019. Lebioda is mostly an ownership fade. It’s high for this range and Hank doesn’t seem to like bermuda much. He’s an awesome putter but his bermuda track record is the opposite of that. Some wild swings with that stick.

$6k:

DB: Play - Scott Stallings, Brice Garnett, Henrik Norlander

Pat: Play - Brian Stuard, Sam Ryder, Roger Sloan

AC: Play - Adam Hadwin, Tom Lewis, Camillo Villegas

I am a big fan of Norlander this week and got some love for Sloan as well. I like another Canadian too. Hadwin might not be able to contend for a top spot but he can get a T20. He has spiked a few times this season and sits 112nd in the FedEx Cup standings with tour status on the line. It’s very likely Lewis misses the playoffs. If he can muster up a T3 he has a shot. If not, it’s off to the Korn Ferry Tour (KFT) Finals. Villegas has won here and is 129th. !25th os better secures his card. Otherwise, he goes back to the KFT.

That’s all this week. Good luck. May your screens be green.
