Outright Bets for The Travelers Championship 2023
The Betting Approach for The Travelers Championship 2023
The final elevated event of the PGA TOUR season gets going at TPC River Highlands for The Travelers Championship. If you missed the betting preview I did with Hunter Mahan, you really should at least listen to about the 30m-45m mark where Hunter talks about TPC River Highlands. He's a former champion here, and he gained 43 strokes over a 3 years stretch at The Travelers. It was fantastic insight.
Vegas has the O/U winning score at -17.5. Xander took it to -19 last year, and I could see it getting there again this year, especially with some rain coming in to potentially soften up the course. The TOUR will give these guys some birdie pins after a brutal week at the US Open.
The weather's changed a lot this week. Every time I check it, it's something different. We'll monitor it into tonight's DISCORD chat.
Either way, I want guys that can load up on birdies, play positional golf off the tee, throw darts with wedges and mid irons, and feast on par 4s. As I went into on the shows this week, I also like guys that have made this a stop after the US Open in years past. I like young guys with no wives, no kids, and shit to do but go from LA to Hartford to play golf.
More Intel on TPC River Highlands
We're all pretty familiar with TPC River Highlands. Other than the Hunter Mahan interview, if you'd like more intel on the course, check out Nate's Rundown article here on the TJ blog when you get a minute.
Plus, we've got our 10+ year PGA TOUR caddie contributing every week in the Nut Hut , in John Rathouz. John will be in the Nut Hut weekly sharing insights on the courses, how they're playing and what he's hearing from ground zero that week.
If you're in the Nut Hut and you've not scrolled the #Caddie-Info channel this week...you're missing a TON of information. The chat tonight will cover everything from strategy in GPPs, cash games, betting, weather and tee time wave advantages, and of course picks & fades. If you'd like more detail on the weather and our thoughts, then check the Nut Hut and sign up for the Chalk Bomb email going out here in a few hours.
This is NOT Your Mama's Betting Article
I bet on golf for fun. You should too. Life is too short to bet favorites! Therefore, I don't get the betting erection I crave betting guys at 18/1 or 9/1. I realize that may be the sharper way to do things, but F that. I've felt the rush of having a big triple-digit winning golf bet hit...and Daddy likes!
Throughout the season, I'm going to show you my pre-tournament bets, including what I'm risking, odds, and some brief logic behind the pick. I'm actually betting on these guys. I'm taking $50 a week at $10 per unit to show you how I allot my dollars. Follow along, bet with me if you like, or completely fade everyone on this betting card. Up to you. I finished the 2019-2020 PGA Tour season up 10 units over 30 weeks, the 2020-2021 season up 41 units and the 2021-2022 season up 26 units strictly betting the long shot outrights (nothing shorter than 25/1).
Long Shot Outright Bets for The Travelers Championship 2023
Smith, Fowler, and Tommy Lad all finished top 5...but no Wyndham. I'm devastated to miss out on Wyndham for the 2nd time this season after being so bullish on him since the beginning of the year. Oh well...that' how it goes with gambling. I'm now down 12 units on the season after shooting blanks since The Match Play 50/1 hit with Sam Burns. I'm ready to burn this season to ground, but here we go.
It's a loaded card with 3 bombs over 100/1 (in an elevated event...I know...I'm a sucker) and I didn't love anyone from 25/1 up until I got to Tommy Lad...AGAIN.
I had resolved to not bet Tommy after Saturday at the USO, but then he shot a 63. I just think Tommy's dying to win. I still believe he will.
Si Woo checks all the boxes and loves Pete Dye. For a guy at 45/1 in an elevated event, we know he won't shit himself if he's in contention Sunday.
Tom, Henley, Theegala, English and Hubbs all got plenty of chatter on the betting podcast with Hunter. Glad I hit Henley before he shortened. I wouldn't touch him at 35/1 now.
Denny's a guy who I now somewhat trust to get it done soon given his form, recent runner up at Memorial (elevated field), and his fit for TPC River Highlands. It's just insane he hasn't played well here. I'm gonna trust the leveled up Denny at a great course and a large number at 75/1.
I don't know that Eckroat's the greatest fit here as I see him doing better on tougher courses where he can hit more drivers. However, the incoming heater he's on, plus the triple digit value is too good to pass up.
Rai is my guy that I don't think enough people are paying attention to. He hits it up a gnat's ass off the tee, his irons have been hot the last 3 events, and while his putter generally isn't great...it's at least nice that his best surface is bent.
Alright, off to help write the Chalk Bomb! Have a great week and #BendOverYourBookie!
