Around the Clubhouse
Welcome to your place for all the light-hearted golf content you need. We will be going around the clubhouse, reacting to many of the viral golf moments of the past week. From pro golf to your horrific swing, if it makes you laugh, then it may show up. This week we look into the great and not-so-great moments at the 2023 U.S. Open and wish a Happy Father's Day to all the golf dads out there. Stay tuned for this week's player to watch. Grab your beer, and let's get into it.
U.S. Open Hole Outs
Sam Burns and Matthieu Pavon both picked up hole-in-ones on the short par 3 Thursday becoming just the second pair of players to even ace the same hole in the same round in US Open history. The two shots basically replicated each other with some beautiful spin straight back into the cup. Sam’s celebration was the better of the two, purely because I love me a nice club chuck. There’s just nothing better than the pure joy on their faces.
Fitzy joined in on the ace fun on Thursday, but didn’t even realize it until the crowd began to scream. So lowkey and then out of nowhere, boom club throw and instant excitement like he won the lottery. I can’t imagine this happening, I’m used to thinking the ball is on the green, then walking up and seeing that it rolled off into the woods.
Typical Scottie being Scottie moment here. A hole out for eagle from 200 yards out… sheeesh what a moment too to get within striking distance heading into Sunday. A nice little hip check into his caddie, almost caught him with a forearm shiver.
LACC Struggles
This is painful to watch. Svenson chips out from the sand but has to sit and watch the ball trickle all the way back down through the entire green. You can hear the “sit” chatter from the Canadian, but to no avail. Just like when I skull a chip 40 feet past the green and yell “sit” like it really is going to change anything.
Xander had a fantastic first two days, but this was not his finest moment. Not one bunker shot off the lip, but back-to-back disasters. That is not a fantastic way to start the round. This makes all of us weekend golfers feel much better about this happening to us twice a round! Third times a charm!
Ball in Golf Cart
How is this even possible? The ball not only hit the cart, but ended up right in the ball holder. Gonna need a ruling there, that has to be a first. My guy should have driven the cart to the green and act like he didn’t notice the ball… would have loved to see what the rules official makes of that. This is the greatest golf trick shot to date… Dude Perfect would be proud. I can’t imagine how many tries that would take to replicate.
Ball Nearly Hits Si Woo
Si Woo is just a sensational human. What a quality reaction to almost getting drilled by a wayward shot. Kim went down like Neymar flopping on the field like a fish! The laugh and the hug says it all… What a likable guy just having a great time on the course. A few guys on tour would not have had that reaction, I can guarantee that. The best thing to do there is laugh it off! We all need to be more like Si Woo.
Happy Father's Day- Golf Edition
Rickie and Spieth on the green post-practice round with their kids is such a great sight. When watching them golf, you never think about how these guys are off the course, so to see them hanging with their kids and Uncle JT is so cool. Sammy Spieth drilled that putt… future drive, chip and putt champion for the under-4 division.
FORE! This is a nightmare coming true for the poor dad. Maybe should stick to basketball or soccer, anything without a club or bat. He took it like a champ though, no f-bombs after getting hit in the face with a driver is very impressive.
Golf dad 101. Just looks like a normal pushcart until the screaming and crying comes during your back swing. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who put up with their kid’s horrific golfing and have the patience to watch them swing and miss 7 times!
Young Golfer to Root for this Week
Michael Thorbjornsen
After picking a Stanford Cardinal last week, I decided to stay the course with another... Thorbjornsen has played in back-to-back weeks at the Canadian Opena and the U.S. Open and missed both cuts, but this kid has the talent to succeed on tour.
At just 21 years old, Michael was an All-American in 2023 and this course is not far from where he grew up in Massachusetts.
This could be a coming-out party for the Thorbman and his fantastic golf game.
