The Power Fade: 2024 THE Valspar Championship
The Approach to fading big names for the 2024 Valspar Championship
What’s going on TJ Nation! Ann Arbor's Own Good Ol' AK Allen Klutts here bringing you another edition of the Power Fade: The Fades 8K and Above You Need to Smash Your DraftKings GPP's!
Coming off the heels of a historic PLAYERS Championship which saw the Lord's favorite golfer Scottie Scheffler become the first man to defend his title we head to Tampa and the famed "Snake Pit".
The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort plays as a Par 71 at roughly 7,300 yards. With 5 par 3's this week, two of which are in the Snake Pit, we find a course that can play very difficult should the weather play a factor.
As we look to continue our streak of having an MC in the Power Fade, let's take a look at who we will be fading for the Valspar Championship!
Doug Ghim ($8,400)
Our first Power Fade of the week is a first timer in the Power Fade. Doug Ghim, a DFS darling makes his debut at $8,400 on DraftKings.
Why The Fade Works:
Doug Ghim is a very talented golfer, let us first make this perfectly clear. If the game was played on paper, Ghim might win every week the way his stats pop off the charts. However, the Ghim-reaper does have some statistical flaws that lend itself to a fade discussion.
Doug G comes in ranking 107th in Good Drives this week. When he was in the low 7k to 6k range on DraftKings this was less of an issue. Having to invest lineup capital in the mid 8k range on a player who can struggle off the tee like this is a scary proposition.
Ownership and lineup construction is also another reason to potential fade Ghim this week. Ghim is projecting early to have over 20% ownership. While Ghim is a fine player, let's not mistake him for Scottie Scheffler when he gets to 20% ownership.
While Ghim has leveled his game up in 2024, he is still a volatile player who can blow up. Many people will start lineups with a Burns/Xander then Doug Ghim. A good way to pivot off of this is fade the 20% Ghim and play Sepp Straka who comes in underpriced at $7,900 on DraftKings and at a third of the ownership.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($8,800)
Our second Fade of the week is also a first timer for the Power Fade. Ol' C-Bez, Christiaan Bezuiedenhout who comes in at $8,800 on DraftKings is our second Power Fade of the week.
Why The Fade Works:
C-Bez has been playing pretty well in 2024, and seems to be making a jump in class of player that he is.
However, C-Bez has shown some struggles that at his price tag may warrant fading the South African. Ranking 104th in Strokes Gained Off The Tee is very concerning.
We all know the driver isn't C-Bez's greatest asset, but at $8,800 this is red alert territory. Furthermore, if you factor in a 120th ranking in Fairways gained with how gnarly the rough at Innisbrook can be and C-Bez may be scrambling for Par all day long.
For a man who makes his bones with solid iron play, C-Bez seems to struggle in the key Par 3 range this week. Remember that there is a ton of variance when it comes to the two par 3's that are in the Snake Pit.
Ranking 68th in Par 3 scoring this week is all I need to see to fade C-Bez knowing his high ownership and one bad shot in the Snake Pit can lead us to huge leverage by fading the South African.
That's it folks for this week's edition of the Power Fade! We will be returning to you next week as we head to Texas and the Houston Open!
