AK's Power Plays: 2024 Open Championship
The Power Plays for the 2024 Open Championship
What’s going on TJ Nation! Ann Arbor's Own Good Ol' AK Allen Klutts here bringing you another edition of the Power Plays: The Plays to Win You Money at the US Open!
Our two week tour of Scotland culminates with the oldest of the four majors. The Claret Jug is on the line as we head to the Open Championship.
Royal Troon plays host to this year's Open. A Par 71, tipping out at 7,300 yards, weather will be a major factor this week. Should the winds be down, holes 1-6 will play especially benign. These holes lay on the coast and offer little resistance to every player in the field.
The interesting thing about Royal Troon is that not one particular skill set stands out. This is mostly due to the ever changing weather. Troon features small greens, but this can be rendered moot if the wind is down. Bombers will be advantageous in this scenario.
If the winds come into play, ball strikers and precision come more into play, and those who can hit these small greens in regulation will surely have the advantage.
As we head into 2024's final major, let us take a look at who will lift your GPP's to green screens at Royal Troon. Bring on the Power Plays!
Wyndham Clark ($8,000)
Our first Power Play of the week has the ability to go nuclear low, having done it just this past Sunday. Following his Sunday 62, Wyndham Clark looks to build upon this success.
Why This Power Play Works:
Wyndy C can certainly keep up with the big boys in this tournament. When you look at the stats, Clark rates out very well for Royal Troon.
Clark crushes the field in SG Approach from the key range of 120-180 yards. Ranking 8th this week, this should help Clark achieve success around Troon.
Obviously Clark is a bomber. Wyndy C ranks 3rd in the BTN model for ball speed, which will be a critical stat this week. Even if he has to club down, Clark should have a nice advantage if he can find the fairway.
Par 3 scoring will be crucial on these treacherous par 3's. Wyndy ranks 5th in Par 3 scoring this week. Outside of the Par 3 8th "Postage Stamp" hole, which is its own battle, these Par 3's play long and tough which should play to Clark's advantage.
Joaquin Niemann ($7,800)
Our second Power Play of the week is someone we don't get to play often since his departure for LIV. Joaquin Niemann, who comes to us at a very juicy $7,800 price tag is our second Power Play.
Why This Power Play Works:
If you were to look at a prototype for an Open Championship player, Joaquin Niemann comes to mind. His piercing low ball flight can work wonders on a links course, and with his 23rd ranking in ball speed a lethal combination exists.
Niemann also fares well around the greens. Ranking 30th in SG ARG, he has the ability to get up and down which will keep him in the tournament.
At this pricetag, Niemann provides immense upside, without having to win. Fire up Joaquin and dare to dream this week!
That's it folks for this Special Edition of the Power Plays! We will return to you in the future with some more plays to turn those screens green!
