The Power Fade: 2024 3M Open
The Approach to fading big names for the 2024 3m Open
What’s going on TJ Nation! Ann Arbor's Own Good Ol' AK Allen Klutts here bringing you another edition of the Power Fade: The Fades 8K and Above You Need to Smash Your DraftKings GPP's!
Xander Schauffele... What can you say about the man who a mere 5 months ago was the top on name on the infamous "Never to win a Major" list. Fast forward to today and he has won 2 of the last 3 major titles.
The PGA TOUR returns stateside for the 3M Open. TPC Twin Cities plays host to this weeks event, that while isn't a strong field, certainly is not weak either.
A Par 71 playing a shade under 7,400 yards, TPC Twin Cities is a birdie making course, however trouble is lurking for errant shots. This especially holds true for the exciting Par 5 18th, where eagles and double bogeys await.
Our key stats this week (Powered by Bet The Number.. Get your membership at Betthenumbergolf.com)Â will focus on Strokes Gained Off The Tee, SG Approach from 120-180 yards, and Strokes Gained Putting.
With the PF's most successful week of the year behind us (Fleetwood and Hovland both MC) we roll on! Let's take a look at who our Power Fades are for the 3M Open!
Nick Dunlap ($8,400)
With all that has happened in the world over the last few days, one man's success seemingly went under the radar. Nick Dunlap won the Barracuda, flying up the leaderboard on Sunday.
However, this didn't go unnoticed by yours truly. The Crimson Tide product, who was a recent visitor to the PF at the Rocket Mortgage returns to the PF this week at $8,400 on DraftKings.
Why The Fade Works:
Dunlap is uber talented, no doubt about this. However the stats do point to fading the now two time PGA Tour winner.
Ranking 117th in Strokes Gained Approach from the key range of 120-180 yards is not ideal this week. Furthermore the putter has not been a consistent friend to Dunlap as he ranks 76th this week.
In these birdiefest type environments, Par 3 scoring is often not thought about. While yes, Dunlap is ranked quite highly in Par 4 Birdies or Better, he struggles on the Par 3's. Dunlap ranks 119th in Par 3 scoring this week.
As mentioned in the Rocket Mortgage Power Fade article, Dunlap struggles to put together back to back good outings. I believe this is a great opportunity to capitalize on this and make a great fade.
Sam Burns ($10,000)
Our second Power Fade of the week was briefly in contention at the Open Championship, but a final round disaster dashed his dreams of hoisting the Claret Jug. Sam Burns, who comes to us at $10,000 is our second Power Fade of the week.
Why The Fade Works:
Sam Burns is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Uber talented, but at times a risky play and this week the risk is not worth it.
Burns struggles in some key statistical areas. 116th in the key Approach range of 120-180 yards. Par 3 scoring is no friend to the LSU Tiger as he ranks 138th in the field.
The only reason for Burns to be 10k this week is because of the field strength. Sam hasn't exactly been playing great of late, and if the masses are going to jump on him, we can pivot to better plays up and down the board.
That's it folks for this week's edition of the Power Fade!
