The Power Fade: 2023 Rocket Mortgage classic
The Approach to fading big names for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic
What’s going on TJ Nation! Allen Klutts here with another addition of The Power Fade: The Fades 8k and Above that will help you smash your DraftKings GPP's.
The PGA Tour wheels its way into the Motor City for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Detroit Golf Club, a classic Donald Ross design will present the players with a true "pitch and putt" contest.
Without further adieu, let's get into the Power Fades for my home state event!
Justin Thomas ($10,000)
Justin Thomas kicks off our Power Fades at $10,000 on DraftKings. While JT finally showed some form at The Travelers, I for one am not ready to get back on the JT train.
Why The Fade Works:
Looking into the stats for JT this week, he ranks very poorly in the key Par 4 range of 400-450 yards (80th). Additionally, JT loves to hit him a foul ball, ranking 90th in Good Drives Gained and 77th in SG OTT.
I am well aware that this is a "pitch and putt" at Detroit GC. However, you have to keep the ball in the fairway on this course. If you're a little off line with your tee ball, you can end up in the Detroit neighborhoods quite easily.
JT's putter is also horrendous. This is no secret to anyone who watches him play or rosters him in DFS. Having a dynamic this week where you have to putt well isn't exactly a JT specialty.
At $10,000 on DraftKings, we need consistency to meet value. Even thou JT had a spark last week, I am not convinced that it was anything more than fools gold.
Ludvig Aberg ($8,700)
Unquestionably the youngest player to ever appear in the Power Fade to this date, Ludvig Aberg is our second Power Fade at $8,700
Why The Fade Works:
Ludvig is talented, there is no debate about this. However, now that he has a few PGA Tour rounds under his belt, he needs to be scrutinized.
Statistically, Aberg isn't exactly a monster when it comes to Good Drives (77th) and Greens in Regulation (88th). As with Justin Thomas, yes you can score at Detroit CC, but you have to keep the ball in play to accomplish this task.
Making birdies hasn't exactly been the forte of the Swedish Sensation. Ranking 79th in this field, we now have merit to start looking elsewhere on DraftKings. Do not get me wrong, I am very high on Adberg long term. If he was in the low 7K range, i'd say let's play the talent over the stats. When you creep up to near 9K on DraftKings, we now need to talk about can he produce value, especially when we need at least a Top-20 finish. I am just not convinced at this time in such a high variance event.
That's it folks for this week's edition of the Power Fade. We will return to you next week as head to the Quad Cities for the John Deere!
Until then Be Bold, Be Brave, and Let's Ride the Power Fade!
