The Power Fade: 2023 3M Open
The Approach to fading big names for the 2023 3M Open
What’s going on TJ Nation! Allen Klutts here with another addition of The Power Fade: The Fades 8k and Above that will help you smash your DraftKings GPP's.
With major season now behind us, we march towards the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs. Our first stop lands us in Minnesota for the 3M Open. A weak field following the Open Championship, many are looking to solidify their spot in the playoffs.
With a birdie fest on the docket this week, we can expect some high variance. A fair question will be is there "good chalk"?
After a 2-0 week at the Open Championship, let's continue our success and jump into our Power Fades for the 3M Open.
Cameron Young ($10,900)
Cameron Young kicks off our Power Fades this week at $10,900. In one of the most asinine pricing moves of the year by DraftKings, there is just no way we can play Cam Young.
Why The Fade Works:
First of all, the price on Cam Young this week is purely name value. After a nice little run at the John Deere (6th) and The Open (8th), some may believe that Cam is coming back.
While these finishes are nice, they do not indicate that Cam is optimal, let alone will pay off such a lofty price tag. Keep in mind that Cam has never won a PGA Tour event, but he is being priced like the class of this field.
Cameron Young's putter freaking sucks. It has to be said. Ranking 118th in putting at this price tag just isn't going to get it done. In a shootout, birdie fest environment, I just fail to see how he can make enough putts to win. It's not like he is Scottie Scheffler with his Off the Tee and Ball Striking either.
Amazingly, for all his length Cam struggles with Par 5 scoring, which will be key this week with only 3 of them.
While the stat models and touts will proclaim Cam Young has risen from the grave, I'm not ready to commit. I'll take my chances and start my lineups with Hideki Matsuyama at 900$ cheaper.
Lucas Glover ($8,200)
Lucas Glover makes his Power Fade debut this week at $8,200. While the Glove has been playing better, a high variance course at projected high ownership makes this fade worthwhile.
Why The Fade Works:
Much like Cam Young, Glover is a horrible putter. To his credit since switching putters, Glover has been better but not great. In a birdie-fest, we need guys who can sink putts. Factor in high ownership on a guy who has good results of late and we can easily see why a pivot up or down the board is the move.
The stats show that Glover has been immaculate with his OTT and Ball Striking of late. I'm not going to deny this, but again like Cam Young, I say this..... Lucas Glover is not Scottie Scheffeler.
Additionally, it's not like we haven't seen Glover's Tee to Green game leave him before. Golf is hard, and if Glover is off even a fraction in an environment where -4 to -6 can be the cut line, we have a recipe that see's the former Major Champion trunk slamming Friday afternoon.
That's it folks for this week's edition of the Power Fade. We will be back next week for the Regular Season Finale! The Wyndham Championship!. Until then Be Bold, Be Brave, and Let's Ride the Power Fade!
